MY INNOVATION – A TECHNO-SOCIAL INITIATIVE BY KSHITIJ 2011

MY INNOVATION – A TECHNO-SOCIAL INITIATIVE BY KSHITIJ 2011

Kshitij, the annual techno-management fest of IIT Kharagpur has come a long way since its inception in 2004 in becoming the largest fest of its kind in the whole of Asia.
It has been our earnest endeavour to provide a platform to numerous talented students across the world to exhibit their scientific dexterity and managerial acumen and spread the spirit of youth by uniting young minds from various colleges under the banner of science, technology and management.

Kshitij 2011 presents 'My Innovation', an event aimed to contribute towards the upliftment of rural population. The rural life has many problems which are striving for solutions. We have solutions for a handful of them, only if we try to unearth them. No scientific research and no mastery over Nano-technology are required to help the rural population. Only thing required is 'the will' and 'a medium'. You need to show the former and we provide the latter.
An efficient machine for breaking rocks, a small hydroelectric plant that can generate power from low velocity water streams, a low cost mill to extract oil can help the rural population in a big way. The youth is expected to come together for the noble cause and streamline their thoughts for the purpose. So, put your thinking caps on and set your ideas in motion. We will ensure that they reach the right places.

SOLARGIZE - KSHITIJ 2011 - Industrial Design Problem By General Electric (GE)

SOLARGIZE - KSHITIJ 2011 - Industrial Design Problem By General Electric (GE)

Details of Event: Solargize

India has an estimated power requirement between 800,000 MW and 950,000MW by 2030. To help India meet its gigantic future energy requirements, the Prime Minister has expressed the need to develop public private partnerships in ways and means to meet the estimated Rs.60,000 billion ($1.2 trillion) investment required over next 25 years to provide electricity to consumers at affordable cost.

The limited supplies, uneven distribution, and rising costs of fossil fuels, such as oil and gas, create a need to change to more sustainable energy sources in the foreseeable future. Pointing out that India is short of energy resources like oil, gas and uranium and even coal is not as abundant as is generally believed, there is a high focus on tapping the abundant renewable sources like solar power. Hence over the coming decades one of India's greatest challenge will be to secure diversified sources of energy.

The project should aim at developing a business model to tap the potential market segment in India.
Incentives:

1) Prize money of INR 85,000 for the IDP

2) A chance to bag an internship in GE

IDP:

Develop a techno-commercial model by studying the concentrated solar power market with developments and forecasts for India and identify the potential locations in India suitable for harnessing solar power for the generation of electricity.

Key Challenges:

* Identify the potential locations in India suitable for harnessing solar power for the generation of electricity
* Provide the Summary of cost of electricity & Return on Investment
* Identify strategy & segment in Indian concentrated solar power generation market
* Business/commercial models must be demonstrated to show a business opportunity in the Indian market
* Identify technology gaps in the existing industrial products.
* Identify the effect of government incentives on the Solar power market
* Identify who would be potential customers in concentrated solar power generation market
* Identifying the competition landscape (all players) & their penetration in the Indian market
* What are the key advances in the mirror market supporting this technology & Study of supply base for components, EPC stakeholders, civil works & thermal storage?
