A write up by iKnowledge Editor Ishita Shah on Does Healthcare Need Healing? Episode

Since time immemorial, we have been using and reading the phrase 'Health is Wealth', but it seems as if the proverb has been misinterpreted by the doctors in India. People's health for them has attained monetary values and in the face of physical illness and distress they see money and seek to gain out of every situation: big and small.

Amir Khan's Production Satyamev Jayate took up this issue today and revealed horrifying facts. The Satyamev Jayate team has thrown light upon some sad situations and their approach touches the right chord because they deal with it sensitively.

Doctors prescribing unnecessary pathological tests for patients are quite common, but now another dimension of these farce treatments is, unnecessary transplant surgeries. For example, Retired Major Pankaj Rai lost his wife Seema to a hospital that not only emphasized on an unnecessary kidney transplant but even transplanted her pancreas. According to Rai, the doctors said they were going to transplant the pancreas only because a donor was available. This sounds like a lady in a supermarket who might buy a packet of biscuits just because it is available on the racks! This is what the doctors' acts and intentions have boiled down to. Seema lost her life and her family suffers for no fault of their own.

Dr Anil Pichad, the owner of a Pathological Laboratory and Dr Amol Pandit, a doctor practicing in England highlighted how every medical body in India centres on monetary commissions. Commission for referring to a laboratory, for referring to a superior doctor, for prescribing a particular medicine; and just about everything that treatment procedure requires is covered under a commission scheme.

There are problems galore and issues unsolved, doctors accused but their licenses not cancelled, scams reported but not solved, frauds detected but not addressed. The medical system suffers a life threatening disease and alas! There is no doctor to treat this system.

On his show, Amir not only points towards the problem but also highlights the steps taken by people across the country to solve these problems. He shows us the darkness and also directs us towards the ray of light in the darkness. He had Dr. K.K. Talwar assure us on national television that the Medical Council of India would not hesitate to take steps to regulate the system hereafter. We could say that his words cannot be relied upon but how many of us knew the problems that MCI had been caught up in since 2001? More importantly, how many of us knew who the president of the MCI was? Now, we know the man, we know the troubles he's had to face, we know his responsibilities and he has promised the entire nation at large to take strict action. A ray of light has been shown.

Dr Devi Shetty, Chairman of Narayan Hridayalay sets another example by introducing several schemes for the betterment of the poor segment of society. They can take to these schemes and for every ten rupees they deposit per month; the Government shall add rupees thirty, in order to build a sum for their healthcare. Under the hospital's subsidized prices about 1650 different surgeries can be conducted fairly easily, in this manner.

Dr Samit Sharma, in Rajasthan, with the help of the Rajasthan Government sells generic medicines which cost much less than the branded medicines. The show explained the meaning of generic very well, and comprehensively. If given an option, why wouldn't the people buy these medicines so as to stay away from heavy debt incurred for medical treatment? The path has to be shown and it is not long before such paths carved with care, can lead us to the path of progress.

The show was heart-warming as usual. While it is easy to point out mistakes in a system, Satyamev Jayate's efforts are commendable because in their 90 minutes slot, they point out the method of redress and suggestive measures of seeking relief as well.

After all, manpower is the advantage of our country and it can continue to be an advantage only until our health is in good shape. China exceeds us in terms of population, but is still doing well for itself as a country. They are a large nation but a healthy nation. So why should we lag behind?
