If you’re the sort of a person who feels that the placards reading ‘Close tap after use’, ‘Save Water’, ‘Don’t leave the shower running’; are all nonsensical and no matter how impactful the message, if you remain unaffected by it, then today’s Satyamev Jayate episode was meant just for you.
Today’s issue was Water Scarcity, its different aspects- the problems, solutions and dimensions. Geography and Science books provide immense information about how much water is available on Earth and what part of it is drinkable and similar such statistics. But it’s the sense of moral responsibility within us which determines whether we are water wasters or conservers.
Amir Khan and his team should be credited for their efforts in researching on this topic. It was astonishing to see how people ransacked the water tanks in villages and districts when these were called in as contingency measures. A little boy even lost his life in the chaos, when the wheels of the tanker crushed him to death. It was saddening. When we throw a wrapper into a nearby pond we seldom realize the effect it has on us. Ravi Agarwal , the Head of Toxins Link threw light on this aspect it was bewildering to know that increase in the quantity of lead in water bodies was actually the cause of lower IQ levels in people of the newer generations!
As usual, the episode didn’t leave us a question mark on our face or lines of tension on our forehead.  The highlighted the problem and revealed solutions, featured people who are conserving water in different areas using various means. For example Santa Sheela Nair from the State Planning Commission, Tamil Nadu focused on how the state had enforced rain water harvesting for all the homes in their region. It was made compulsory in 2003 and today, in 2012 they are collectively reaping results. (literally too!)
It has been the law of the world that if you do not respect a certain thing it will not be with you for long. The same is true for water. Conserve it , preserve it, save it so that you can cherish it!
Motives for wars are aplenty and God forbid, if we don’t rise to action there will come a time when there will be fights and battles for H2O!
Being a Kolkattan when I see and read about the Teesta Water Treaty with Bangladesh at close quarters, and associate it with today’s episode of Satyamev Jayate; there is an inner voice in me which calls out to say: Respect what you have! Do you have an inner voice?
