A write up by iKnowledge Editor Ishita Shah on Old Age Episode

As soon as the clock strikes 11 on a Sunday morning, my whole family gathers in front of the television set. All work is forgotten and everyone sits before the otherwise idiot box, even a bath is postponed until after 12:30pm.Today was no different. We all assembled before the television and five minutes into the show, and my mother’s eyes was filled with tears. Tears waiting to come out, tears symbolizing fear, tears denoting insecurity.

Today’s episode concentrated on old age and what is the plight of the people who are deserted by their children at the far end of their life. There were several stories which were depicted via the visual and it was sad to see the mothers crying in pain. I was surprised to know that Varanasi served as a refuge for mothers who had been abandoned by their sons. 15,000 widows turned to Lord Krishna after being let alone b their own sons. The astonishing facts which were revealed were about a practice in a village in Tamil Nadu where they killed the aged members of the society. Another such surprising incident was that shared by a person who runs an Old Age home. He shared some instances of people being deserted by their children and the most disturbing one was of an old person being left at a railway station by his child who had promised to return with a taxi. Imagine their plight at being left in the middle of nowhere!

During the episode, Amir Khan brought out several measures that can be undertaken to solve this problem. From remarriages to State Welfare Pension Schemes, working beyond retirement age if the body permits to even live in relationships! The last option has been implemented by a certain Natubhai in Ahmedabad, Gujarat who opinioned that the idea was gaining popularity as times were changing.

There are several alternatives that one can adopt to do away with the loneliness that makes home in their heart. If they find a reason and a means to live they won’t await death so desperately and not live in gloom. Mr Himangshu Rath from Agewell Foundation emphasized that the oldies should not pass on their valuables such as property or savings to their off-spring. This act is done with unbound love but sometimes their children cease to feel any emotions and abandon the parents once they become penniless and dependent.

Rath also highlighted the economic aspect of this situation. He pointed out how a person was expected to retire at the age of 60, but due to increase in the general longevity of human life he continues to live for at least another 20 years. Due to several reasons and from being caught up with bringing up his children, he is not financially prepared to look after himself for 20 years without earning. At the same time, his children are also learning their regular lives and from being caught in the daily grind, they find neither money nor time for those who gave them life.

Archana Kaushik, Professor of Delhi University also highlighted how the elderly could be helped with day care centers set up primarily for them. This would replicate the models meant for children, after all old age is also second childhood! This is an appealing option and would do well because if the people have something to look forward to, somewhere to go, new people to meet; their mental health would stay fit and fine. Moreover, the clashes with the other members of the family would reduce phenomenally!

This episode ranges among my favourites and it was truly touching. Even though, Satyamev Jayate makes your Sunday mornings a little depressing, it shows you the world, holds a mirror before you, warns, guides and leads you towards an ethical and morally right life!
