Think Before You Drink Episode
Once upon a time when I was a little girl and was headed to my granny’s place on a bright Saturday morning; I noticed a shop on a street corner that read:‘Country Spirit Shop’. I was curious to know what was sold there because the word ‘spirit’ was foreign to me. I didn’t know any of the meanings that the word ‘spirit’ stands for. At that time when I asked my mother what that shop sold, she hushed me down fearing that the taxi driver would hear. However, I did not know what was in the shop that ought not to be talked about, especially because my mother seldom condemned anything, and even fewer times did she refrain from telling me what the truth was. Thus, perplexed I sat quietly through the taxi ride, and as soon as we got off, my mother told me what it was. Years have passed and I now know why it was whispered to me in hushed tones, the shop sold ‘desi daru’ as it is called in the crudest Indian language.
Today’s episode of Satyamev Jayate reminded me of this incident, and I thought to myself how important it is to be made aware, to be educated so as to be able to distinguish right from wrong and good from bad.
Amir Khan brought up the topic of alcoholism in today’s episode of Satyamev Jayate. Alcoholism has had a long history in human society, primarily Indian society. We have a patriarchal culture, wherein the man of the house is considered the head. Alas! When this man loses his head!
An alcoholic can have innumerable excuses ranging from bad family life, to poor job prospects, to disappointments in some form or another. However, very rarely does the
destructive nature of alcohol find reasoning in his/ her mind-space. As maybe clear from the beginning of this article, I have not been brought up in a manner where decisions are imposed on me. However, that does not mean that I live on the philosophy of: “It’s either my way or the highway!” Everything, even consumption of alcohol is allowed within permissible limits. As was shared by a doctor on the show, social drinking causes no harm but even that has its own limits (namely, 60ml)
When Vijay narrated his experiences on the show, I had goose bumps because it was uncanny, to hear the extremes to which one can go to hold up his addiction. I commend him for being courageous to feature on national television and share his thoughts with the public at large. It is not easy to own up to our own mistakes, but I am sure he did it for those who are still grasped by the evils of drinking. The way he shared his thoughts and the process of compensation he described, was genuinely heart-warming.
I, personally, did not like the idea of some local governments having the power to shut down liquor shops and the Satyamev Jayate team did take the effort to interview the people of one such village in Punjab. However, it showed our weaknesses. If there is no such thing as self control, then it’s a shame!
The most touching part of the episode today, was Dr Sumir Anand, who had lost his 15 year old son, Karan. The young boy lost his life for no fault of his own; he hadn’t been drinking all that night! It was the boiling blood of another individual, older to him by a couple of years, who turned Karan’s fate around in an act of revenge. This incident truly brought tears to my eyes, and it was one of those moments when you question the presence of God, even momentarily.
