A write up by iKnowledge Editor Ishita Shah on Is Love A Crime??
Satyamev Jayate Fifth Episode

"You may not be the best, but you are my choice and I love you so."

These words sound endearing and loving but they are difficult to be uttered in the Indian society, even today. We live in a free, democratic country and if you'd take effort of referring to the Preamble of the Constitution of India, you'd see big, heavy adjectives used to describe our freedom and our rights. But what does all that boil down to, when you can be threatened and sometimes even killed for marrying by your own choice?

Amir Khan in his weekly philanthropic show touched on this topic this week.

Sometimes when people, especially youngsters, fall in love with people from a different caste, creed, religion or social standing and wish to take their relationship to another level; they are reprimanded. Their freedom is undermined and their love must be held back. However, some people take the courage and take the leap. And that is followed by threats to life and sometimes even calls for what is crudely called 'supari' in Hindi. "Honor Killings", they are called by some people. And I feel, there couldn't be a greater oxymoron than this! We say that the soldiers die an honorable death at the battlefield when they take on death saving Mother India. Even though there isn't any link to the warfront with marriages but to use the term 'honor' for such gruesome murders is disdainful!

As always, Satyamev Jayate followed the format which I exceptionally love! They showed the victims and their troubles first but the remedies and redressal measures followed soon after.

Fahmeeda Mansuri married Lokendra Singh and in their run for life her husband lost his leg. All, in the name of love! Lokendra lost his leg but sadly, there are several others who lost their lives because they married where their heart lay. Rizwanur Khan of Kolkata and Manoj and Bubbly of Haryana feature on that list. For both of them, the case is still being fought in the court and their families await justice from the judicial system. Seema, Manoj's sister couldn't hold back her tears as she narrated the incident of her brother's inhumane murder. Rizwan's mother was emotional too, when she recalled how her son was the center of her life and now her house seems deserted without him.

Amir even invited people who legislate privately on such affairs. He invited what is called 'Khap Panchayat' in the villages. This particular group that came on the show had no connections with any of the stories dealt with, during the show. However their approach seemed quite dubious and they had double standards. In spite of their hypocritical nature, Amir behaved politely with them and that said a lot about their intention behind the show! They do not mean to disrespect a particular group but just draw a clearer picture of right and wrong.

As the ninety minutes went by, he gradually turned to the other side of the issue, the brighter side where the sun seems to have risen late. But better late than never.

Satyamev Jayate is not entirely depressing because it brings out this bright side without bias and the balance is wonderful. It is through them that we learn of problems that we thought had been solved, it is they who bring to our notice certain methods and reliefs available at our hand. The Punjab-Haryana High Court has initiated something which is called Protection Home in that region. It is in these homes that couples, whose alliance is not accepted by their parents, can be married lawfully. Moreover, they are provided shelter for 15 days, and during this time their families are called in for counseling. Following this, under the court's directions the local police have to ensure the safety of the newlyweds. A commendable effort and a fascinating idea! Thereafter, Amir invited someone from an organization called Love Commandos, they provide shelter and support to people who are distressed by such problems. The gentleman correctly pointed that if people can elect the Prime Minister of their country why can't they choose their own life partner? From his own experiences he feels that the police personnel are not aliens imported from another world. It is their ideology which is old and redundant and that causes the problem when people reach out to find redress in the existing system. He also mockingly highlighted the terminology used in such cases; "Ladki bhag gayi". It is odd but yet accepted, discriminating but yet in regular use, and quite like several other things in our lives, girls are referred to as commodities by most men. The sex ratio of Haryana is the worst in the world, and it one of the states which is most stringent about their marriage rules and regulations. However, when girls from unknown areas and cultures are sold in Haryana, their caste creed and religion is not questioned. That is the hypocrisy underlining these stories!

It is sad that the parents who isolate their children get caught up in societal norms and their bond of birth loses in the end
